Tarps Used In Movie Production – quonset buildings

The simple tarp has been a vital component in movie production since the earliest inception of the moving pictures societal phenomenon. In the earliest days they were used to cover objects during set production. The film crew would paint and create elaborate scenes. They would reconstruct a semblance of some far off location as the needs of the movie dictate. They were also incorporated for comedic elements in scenes where people were going to paint something. These scenes inevitably led to gallons of paint being splattered everywhere. It was much cheaper and in genre for the scene to have a tarp available to keep clean up costs at a minimum.

In more recent days the tarp has become known for the ‘green screen’ effect that can be produced. Utilizing modern camera and lighting techniques cinematic scenes that are beyond normal production capacities can be produced.

The Lord of the Rings used them extensively to turn New Zealand into Middle Earth. Spiderman swung swiftly through the air between New York City quonset buildings with the aid of a green tarp. A few dozen zombies in the movie Land of the Dead became a massive army of the undead due to this technical advancement in film.

With even greater use of the green screen tarp specific characters are allowed to have incredibly complex computer generated images working in tandem with their own performances. These special effects give the illusion of flight, superhuman powers, even background explosions and zombies. There is no limit to what can be created on film with the proper use of a well maintained green tarp.

The simple tarp has been utilized often as a guardian and protector of sensitive equipment, vehicles, even as a make shift umbrella during a sudden downpour. They are even used as protection against overexposure to the sun for people working in desert and tropical climates.

If you were to travel to any movie set around the world you would find a tarp on hand as a covering for personal cars and on the floor. You would find them covering windows for lighting effects. There would be a tarp as a sunshade. There would, without any doubt, be a simple set of green tarps on hand to turn a great movie into an amazing cinematic spectacle impossible to achieve otherwise.

There are few if any movies that could be made for commercial purposes without the tried and true tarp. With tarps came movies. They have figuratively walked hand in hand since the inception of cinema and will continue to do so for generations to come.
