Keloid Removal – Research Into Silicone Based Keloid Scar Removal Products

Researchers set out to test the effectiveness of silicone gel keloid scar treatments, and dramatically proved that theory. The same research also added to what we know about keloid scarring, including startling evidence that the fashion trend, body piercing is now “high risk trauma”.
r
rResearchers learned that the areas of the body most vulnerable to keloids are:
r
r? Shoulders and chests.
r? Earlobes and cheeks.
r? Three of the four most risky areas of skin are frequently pierced: ears, cheeks, and chest (piercing at the nipples).
r
rThey learned who is getting pierced.
r
r? The generation aged 20-30 adopted piercing as a fashion statement.
r? Teenagers are copying the look.
r
rResearchers documented those most at risk of forming keloids.
r
r? People younger than 30
r? People with so-called high risk trauma, which now includes piercing.
r
rThey found men and women are at equal risk of keloids.
r
r? Men now get pierced as frequently as women. It used to be mostly women, so the keloid rate was skewed female.
r? The rate of keloid scarring in men now equals that in women.
r
rResearch resulted in dramatic evidence that silicone gels work to reduce keloids, reduce pain and suffering of keloid patients, and promote healing of keloids.
r
rDoctors found applying a silicone gel:
r
r? Decreased the size of keloid scars in 53% of test patients.
r? Reduced keloid tenderness in 36%.
r? Stopped itching in 45%.
r? Softened keloid scar tissue for 45% of test subjects.
r
rMedical Researchers in India found similar results, including keloid scar improvement in more than half the test patients.
r
rThis brings us back to keloids from piercing. Silicone gels seem tailor-made.
r
rThe Advantages of Silicone Gels for Piercing Keloid Scar Removal:
r
r1. It is far easier to use a gel on an earlobe, cheek or nipple than to use the older keloid treatment, in which a silicone sheet was taped over the keloid.
r
r2. A gel is the least expensive of the silicone therapies. It can be directly applied only to the scar, by cotton swab or finger. No silicone is wasted.
r
r3. Sheets deliver silicone to scar and surrounding skin, a waste of silicone.
r
r4. Sheets come off with movement especially if they are placed on an area of the body which is in constant movement thus increasing cost as they must be replaced more often than silicone gels.
r
rDoctor Recommendations about Silicone Keloid Scar Removal:
r
r? It is best used as soon as a wound heals.
r? It is best used at least twice a day in order to derive the maximum effect from the silicone.
r? It must be used on keloid scarring consistently for 3 to 6 months
r? Research finds keloid scar reduction from silicone gels within 6 months.
r? Silicone used in conjunction with keloid removal by surgery or lasers aids healing.
r
rSome footnotes pertaining to Keloid Scar Removal Research.
r
r? Vitamin E showed no effectiveness for treating and diminishing scars.
r? Vitamin E often had a negative effect on the wound area.
r? Onion extract also failed in studies to produce satisfactory results.
r? Lasers do not lessen the risk of new keloids forming where the old keloid was removed. This happens following traditional surgery.
