Jason Clay – Dating game – Do Opposites Attract?

Dating game: debunking the ‘opposites attract’ myth

Everyone’s been in the situation before. You meet your friend’s new partner for the first time, pleasantries are exchanged and everything is perfectly amicable, but you just sense that something isn’t quite right with them as a couple. They seem just a little too…different.

Fast forward a couple of months and the pair are going from strength to strength and you begin to wonder where the chemistry is coming from. He’s tall, dark and shy, whilst she’s petite, fair and very rowdy. What exactly do these two see in each other?

On paper, this would appear to be a classic case of opposites attracting. However, the very definition of the word ‘opposite’ in this sense is two people that are diametrically different in character, tendencies and beliefs. In other words, ‘opposite’ is so very black and white.

Indeed, it’s important not to confuse ‘opposites’ with ‘complements’. Opposing forces simply wouldn’t form a long and healthy relationship, but two people whose personalities complement each other…well, that’s a completely different thing altogether.

With complements: dating to determine compatibility

The whole dating process helps determine people’s compatibility. Whether they meet through friends, at work or an online dating service, the end result is usually the same. They’ll meet for drinks, perhaps a meal or a movie and the spark will either be there or it won’t.

Ultimately, two people’s compatibility will depend on how well they complement each other. There has to be a certain degree of similarity or it simply won’t work. A successful relationship is all about two people coming together and becoming a whole.

And what about the case of the tall, dark shy Jason Clay with the petite, fair rowdy woJason Clay? Well, people by their very nature tend to spot differences before similarities. Only the two people in the heart of a relationship can really know how well they are suited to each other.
