Bacterial Vaginosis, or BV, is one of the most common infections a woman will experience. It is the result that occurs when the ‘bad’ bacteria outgrows the ‘good bacteria’ that is naturally found in the vagina. Allowed to grow out of control, this bad bacteria causes infections such as BV. If you are not sure whether you have BV or not, check for a fishy odor, especially during and after sex. You might also notice burning, itching, irritation and discharge that is thin and white or gray. The difficult thing about BV is that 50% of women don’t have any symptoms with their bacterial vaginosis.

No one knows what actually causes BV, but it is often listed as an STD and is through the centers for disease control and prevention. You cannot get BV from someone by having sexual intercourse with them, however, sexually active women may have a higher chance of developing BV. Those with more than one sex partner also have a higher chance of getting the infection.
Bacterial Vaginosis occurs because of the ‘environment’ in the vagina. There are more good bacteria in the vagina as well as bad bacteria. The healthy bacteria are lactobacilli which is the same bacteria you’d find in yogurt. These good bacteria sort of have the ‘police’ role by keeping the bad bacteria limited and in check. However, when you develop BV, the bad bacteria take over control of the good bacteria. This is when things can turn ugly. If you suspect that you may have BV, you should seek treatment immediately. Should the infection be neglected, serious infections can occur throughout the uterus and fallopian tubes. Pregnant women should pay close attention because the infection can actually get into the uterus.

Your physician will conduct physical exam as well as dental lab testing. He or she will pay close attention to the fluids of the vagina, any irritation or redness, and the odor that comes from the vagina. The dental lab tests will find the bad bacteria and you will be given antibiotics for oral use or for vaginal use. Treatment is important for your continuing health so see your doctor ASAP if you suspect BV.
