A Little Homeopathic Health History

I’ve been having revolutionary thoughts. Recently, our family took a road trip to Valley Forge and in the midst of the walking tour; our guide mentioned that the medicine of the day was crude and archaic. There was no cure for fever, influenza, malaria, cancer or diabetes, he declared. Yeah, those were difficult times, we all mused with shaking heads. The implication, of course, was that today modern medicine has conquered the scourge of these diseases. Wait a minute. Is that true? The more I thought about it, the louder the resounding “NO” became. Each of these diseases are “treated”, but are they cured? Are they just a memory or does society still struggle with them? And what of all the new diseases of modern life…lupus, ADD, anorexia nervosa, depression, allergies, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, Hoshimoto’s disease and so on?

So what has modern medicine contributed since the American Revolution to the elimination of infectious or chronic illness? Hmmm… Well, we have antibiotics. And they have a reputation for killing microorganisms that are bacterial. In fact, upon the arrival of antibiotics to the daily medical scene around the 1930’s, it seemed a panacea. Most illness at that time was infectious and often bacterial, so it appeared valuable. However, time has revealed a different version. It indeed saved lives and for that reason caught on without understanding its potential for overuse and generational implications.

I say it’s time to refresh history. Perhaps a glimpse of what another medicine has contributed to our history might be in order. Let’s consider homeopathy. Homeopathy is a medical method used in the U.S. for over a century when the factions of what we call modern medicine and homeopathy became adversarial. It didn’t take long for this posture to occur, since the allopathic practitioners (advocates of modern drugs and procedures) advised their patients to take their nostrums and the homeopaths advised against this practice and instead offered safe, gentle remedies of noted repute.

Meanwhile, during the time of the American Revolution, a prominent physician to German royalty was revising what he was taught in medical school. Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, with the aid of the medical universities of his day, rediscovered what Hippocrates expounded upon hundreds of years earlier. This is, “like cures like”. At that time, it was a theory that what causes illness can cure it if manipulated in such a way as to antidote the toxic properties and avail only the curative ones. It was indeed just a theory, but Dr. Hahnemann produced proof after poof in years of trials that revealed it was not just a theory, but a resounding law of nature. While our country grew in independence, so did Dr. Hahnemann’s ideas. Homeopathy spread to France where it was well accepted by aristocracy. This happened not only because they were able to buy only the best health care, but because it worked. From there, homeopathy spread to England where the Royal Family accepted it as the only medicines they took. Indeed, even today, they proclaim it to be the reason for the noted longevity of the Queen mother and other members of their family.

Unfortunately, homeopathy wasn’t available to the warriors of the American Revolution. It is, however, available to us today. The drama of the revolution is only equal to the revolutionary thought that homeopathy is the true medicine of mankind. Join the ranks of those who have freed themselves of the constraints of drugs and investigate the possibilities homeopathy has to offer.
